Welcome to Iowa’s AI Future — Why Every Iowan Needs to Pay Attention

Iowa is about to face one of the most significant economic disruptions in its history — and almost no one is talking about it.

Artificial intelligence and robotics are advancing at a pace that most people find difficult to comprehend. What makes Iowa particularly vulnerable is the nature of our economy. Our strongest industries — the ones that employ the most Iowans and anchor our communities — happen to be among the most exposed to AI-driven automation.

Manufacturing is Iowa’s number one industry, contributing roughly $31 billion to the state economy annually and employing more than 226,000 Iowans. Nationally, manufacturing is forecast to lose 2 million jobs due to robotics and AI integration, with more than half of assembly line, packaging, and quality control positions potentially automated by 2030.

Iowa is also home to 7,000 finance and insurance companies employing nearly 95,000 professionals — a sector where AI is already automating underwriting, claims processing, and customer service at a rapid pace.

Transportation and warehousing employs nearly 57,000 Iowans. The U.S. trucking industry alone could lose 1.5 million driving jobs by 2030 as autonomous vehicles advance.

Add agriculture — where AI-guided machinery, drone monitoring, and automated harvesting are already arriving — and the picture becomes clear. One analysis found that automation and AI put more than 272,000 Iowa jobs at high risk — roughly 21.7% of all jobs considered, the fourth highest share of any state in the nation.

These aren’t distant threats. They are already underway.

Iowa’s political leaders, educators, and business community are not yet having the conversations this moment demands. This site exists to help change that — by informing Iowans about what is coming, tracking how our legislature and institutions are responding, and creating a space where Iowa families, workers, and communities can share their stories.

The disruption is coming whether we prepare or not. Our goal is to make sure Iowa is ready.
